Alaskan DMKU Ulu Sheaths
Items May Vary
Every piece of leather is shaped by the life story of the animal, and a unique journey to and through the workshop. These photos are representative samples of the item you will receive. If you have a specific need, you may add a note at checkout or call to discuss. Or browse our small selection of individually photographed actual items.
Ulu Sheaths
Heavy-duty cut and sewn leather, imprinted with the Dancing Man Knives & Ulus logo.
These sheaths are designed with snapping flaps, which keep the ulu safely in the sheath even in rough or catching conditions. Be sure to insert one point first, and slide the ulu in so as not to cut the strap. The sheaths are designed for the Dancing Man line, and nearly always fit great. If your ulu is the exception, the sheath can be returned.
Ulu Types:
Sewing Ulu: Thinner leather; for large sewing ulu, also fits the small sewing ulu
Shop Ulu: Thinner leather
6-inch Fish River: for 6" fish river blades, also fits 5" fish river, and loosely fits the shop ulu
Nunivak: for 6" blades
Small Bristol Bay: for 6-6.5" blades, if ordered with an ulu, we will customize the strap length
Medium Bristol Bay: for 7-7.5" blades, if ordered with an ulu, we will customize the strap length
Large Bristol Bay: for 8-8.5" blades, if ordered with an ulu, we will customize the strap length
Leatherworking
Like a tailor designing a suit, a skilled leatherworker shapes flat leather into a dimensional object or container. The function of the object shapes the form, and a well-fitted sheath can be a piece of art even before embellishment.
Well-made sheaths include a welt (a narrow strip of leather) within the seam, so the knife cannot cut the threads. Of course, selection of leather, strength of thread, efficacy of design, and artistry of execution all affect the quality of the product.
